SailTimer Air Link™

Connects wireless and wired devices.

This small waterproof device connects wired marine electronics, mobile apps and the cloud.  For input, this is the only device that can receive Bluetooth transmissions from the SailTimer Wind Instrument™ and connect on wires to your GPS chartplotter or autopilot.  For output, it is also the only device that can connect your wired anemometer to the crowdsourced wind and race maps at

The Air Link is easy to use, but can do a lot of things...
● It can receive Bluetooth 4 wireless data from the SailTimer Wind Instrument™.
● It lets you display the wireless wind data in NMEA 0183 format on wired marine electronics (or even a Raspberry Pi device), live wind maps online, and with wifi to a web browser or to apps.
● The Air Link can also can take input from a wired anemometer for viewing on live wind maps at  If there is internet in your marina, you can then check wind conditions on your old wired anemometer from home or office.  That has never been possible before.
● It can also retransmit all of your NMEA 0183 data on wifi, connecting your wired network to the advanced features available in mobile apps.  As hydrographic agencies progress on crowdsourcing chart depths, that would also allow you to share water depths online from a wired depthsounder.

It is 1.5" (3.8 cm) thick, with a footprint of 4 x 6" (10.2 x 15.2 cm), not including the tab on each end. The case is filled with black potting resin, which eliminates any risk of condensation or water leaking through a gasket in the case. The only metal parts exposed are the wiring terminal screw clamps, which are non-corrosive brass.

12-Volt Power
The SailTimer Air Link™ runs on 12-volt power.  There are two clamp connectors for easily attaching power wires.  You can use ordinary 14-16 gauge stranded wire.  Or you can use a car lighter plug, or an AC adapter wall plug that ouputs 12 volt DC power, and we provide a few options at the end of the Accessories page. Any 12 volt DC power supply with about 2 Amps of output will work (1.3 Amps is sufficient, and 3 Amps works fine too).

There are also sealed lead acid 12-volt battery packs if you need portability or don't have power on-board.  For example, this one costs $12 US and is just 3.5 x 2.75 x 4 inches in size, so you can easily take it off the boat to charge.  The Air Link draws about .140 Amps at 13.8 volts DC.  So at 5 Amp-hours, this portable battery should give you about 35 hours of power (which might last for several weekends).

Easy NMEA 0183 Wiring

The SailTimer Air Link™ has clamp connectors for NMEA 0183 wiring.  It has both input and output connectors.  It can send out wind data from the SailTimer Wind Instrument™.  It can also display wind data from a wired anemometer in a web browser.  Or it can retransmit on wifi, echoing all incoming NMEA 0183 sentences to mobile apps or computers.

NMEA 2000

The Wind Instrument also needs to transmit wireless data to many 3rd-party mobile apps, and that would not be possible with the closed NMEA 2000 format.  NMEA 2000 is a proprietary format with licensing fees for new products (which increases the cost to you).  A simple text format like NMEA 0183 is open so that any app developer can read data in that format.  Some of the difficulties with up-front fees and certification for new products have been discussed in independent reviews online (e.g. 1, 2, 3).  It also seems to be increasingly likely that boat networks will be based on wireless networking at some point, with wifi or Bluetooth like the SailTimer Wind Instrument™ already uses (the same as we are seeing in homes and cars now).  Then there are no knots of wire behind the switch panel, less weight on board and up the mast, no wires to run through the cabin liner, no pinging inside the mast, and so on. If you use NMEA 2000 wiring on your boat there are converters to get from NMEA 0183 wires into your NMEA 2000 network, such as: Actisense NGW-1 NMEA 2000 Gateway, AllTek Marine NK-80 NMEA2000 Adapter, and the Simrad NMEA 2000®/NMEA 0183 Adapter

View in Any Web Browser
The Air Link can also transmit the wind data from the wireless Wind Instrument or a wired network to any device with wifi and a web browser, such as in the screenshot below.  That is a pretty amazing capability.  Even e-readers typically have wifi and a web browser.  E-readers are low-cost, have amazing battery life, and are easily viewable in direct sunlight.

Easy to Use
This 1-minute YouTube demo shows how easy it is to use.  Just turn on the Air Link when you get to your boat.  Your device will connect to it automatically on wifi.  The Air Link also connects to the Wind Instrument automatically.  Any marine electronics on a wired connection will have wind data.  The Air Link will also automatically join your marina wifi if available, so that you can check online to see wind conditions at your boat.  Additional details are available in the Owner's Manual for the Air Link (PDF, 4.4 MB).

Both the inputs and outputs in the SailTimer Air Link™ are opto-isolated to prevent galvanic corrosion (when two different types of metal are connected to the circuit and in contact with the water), and to preserve your sacrificial zinc anodes below the waterline.  This opto-isolation is a requirement of the NMEA 0183 standard.  It means that we convert the data from electricity to light signals to prevent ground loops and also protect the device from voltage spikes.
